Deadly H5N1 Virus moving Closer to Human-to-Human Transmissibility

The Canadian in critical condition with H5N1 virus (not from known contact with other H5N1 infected animals) has a mutated variant that moves the virus closer to human-to-human transmissibility with high lethality. Scientists have now studied the H5N1 virus that infected a teenager in Canada who had no contact with wild birds or any other animals with H5N1.  This new H5N1 virus has three mutations at positions in the virus’ genome that allow it to attach more easily to human cells.
